Chatter: We Walked Away

We Walked Away

Hello dear friends,

Well, we have a story. Jerry and I took our RV and Jeep to Vermont and New Hampshire for two weeks, just returning yesterday. We were coming through NY to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and a reckless driver attempted to pass coming up a hill. When he reached the crest of the hill, he saw us coming up on the other side. He accelerated to make it past the car he was trying to pass (his sister and his two year old son). He lost control, went in the ditch on his side of the road, tried to correct his mistake, lost a tire while coming back onto the road, slammed the accelerator to the floor, and slammed into the front of our RV at a 45 degree angle going 60 mph. He and his pregnant fiancé died instantly – we walked away from it. If we had not been in our RV, a heavy 450 Ford truck bed, we would have died too. If we had had Alix along, she would have been killed, as she always laid on the couch of the RV where the window was blown out and the side crushed – parts of their car ended up inside of our RV. The sheriff told us he had a reputation for having a lead foot. He only had the minimum $10,000 liability insurance that NY requires. Besides all that, we feel terribly blessed. We were towing the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it was heavily damaged, too. It is repairable, the RV is totaled.

They took us back to a town about 25 miles away, dropped us off at a motel and told us we were free to go. We rented a truck the next day, took a cab to pick it up, went back to the town where the RV and car were towed and cleaned all the stuff out and took two days to drive back home. It was very hard to do, as we really did have a lot of good times in our little buggy. BUT, we are alive, uninjured (except for a stiff neck and more headaches than usual) and we both think each other is pretty swell.

On the positive side, sine we had uninsured, underinsured coverage on the Jeep, we will get our lives back to the same soon. We’re still waiting for the settlement on the RV, but once again, since his insurance was so minimal, ours will have to pay the whole thing. We’ll have to add a little, but we already have a new (used) buggy on hold for us in Iowa … same thing we had, two years younger, 10,000 miles less. It is good to be able to move along the process of making us whole again. We are terribly sad for the families of the two people killed, and for the poor sister who witnessed it all. Thank God she and the baby weren’t hurt. We love you all and are so glad you still have us in YOUR life.
